Our History

The Start of Alexander Broadcasting came about by Tom and Betty Alexander wanting to have a recording studio. Tom Alexander’s passion for electronics and great sounding audio and Betty’s passion for music (long time singer) led them in 1973 to go to Birmingham Alabama to the Maze Corporation which was a professional audio supply outlet. They went to purchase all of the equipment for the recording studio. While there they got into discussion about various aspects of the recording industry, then it was brought up that there was an available FM frequency allocation that was in Selma that had not been filed on. After purchasing a master revox recorder as just a start one way or the other. After further discussion they decided to pursue the radio idea and contacted Phillip Baker, who was a Communications attorney who worked to get applications done. Mr. Baker indicated that it would be feasible. Their love for beautiful music steered them to choosing it for the format of the new radio station. On December 12th 1973, at 4:31pm WALX-FM 100.9 went on the air with a 3,000 watt station. This new Selma station’s coverage was greater than any other station in the market.

At that point, Tom Betty, their Son Scott operated the station . Tom Alexander would do the news… Betty Alexander would have her Sunday night classical music show. In 1977 WAMI went off the air in Selma for financial reasons…  the station went dark.

6 months later, Scott Alexander asked to investigate the frequency at 1340 and again Phillip Baker provided legal assistance to acquire that channel as WMRK (the old call letters to a decommissioned coast guard ship). WMRK was turned on as a Top 40 Rock AM.  In 1981 after much discussion of the beautiful music being changed… the TOP 40 was moved from 1340 and Stereo 101 was created and then in turn big band music was put on the AM. In 1988, the rules changed for FM spacing allocations to allow for WALX to go from 3,000 to 50,000 watts. Scott Alexander built the new transmission facility for the new level of power… Tom Alexander pushed the button to turn it on… he passed away shortly thereafter.

WALX was the first 50,000 station in the state of Alabama. In 1991 Lazer 101 was created to give the station a new identity and the Top 40 was adjusted to Adult Top 40. In 1994 Scott Alexander formed his own company, Scott Communications, and purchased a construction permit from Marion radio for a radio station at 97.3 FM licensed to Orrville, Alabama WJAM-FM. Selma (and Orrville) then had its first urban FM radio station in July of 1994 via WJAM.  In 2004 WJAM moved frequencies from 97.3 to 107.9 in a huge radio deal with Cox media to upgrade their station in Birmingham at 97.3 to a full 50,000 watts. This move allowed WJAM to move from Orrville to Shorter/Montgomery in 2009 and upgrade to 25,000 watts resulting in a brand new Montgomery station under a brand new company that Scott formed, Alexander Broadcasting LLC.

WJAM-FM and WMRK-AM swapped call letters in this move too so Montgomery had WMRK-FM 107.9 and Selma had WJAM-AM 1340. This move created a void in urban programming in Selma on FM radio since 107.9 moved to Montgomery to become Montgomery’s FM station for news and talk.  To fill this void Alexander Broadcasting purchased 96.3 FM in Eufaula, Al and moved the station to Selma in the fall of 2009 and the 1340-AM in which the Urban programming was moved to had a FM counterpart. In 2012, Tom and Betty’s grandson and Scott’s son, Paul, ventured out and invested in a radio station of his own at 100.7 FM which serves Demopolis, Livingston, York, Al and Meridian, MS with Adult Urban programming very similar to WJAM in Selma.

In 2013 Scott Communications purchased a construction permit at 101.5 to fill yet another void in the Selma  radio market…. KIX Country 101.5 was born in April. While this project was taking place in Selma, a new Classic Country station project was taking place in Montgomery and in June of 2013 103.9 The Possum was put on the air as a joint partnership with Bluewater Broadcasting.  The Alexander Family Continues to invest in Selma and many other communities they are proud to serve.
